Well Tim is known to submerge and emerge like a good natured Loch Ness monster at the best of times but this time I had a pretty good excuse; I had appendicitis and something else starting with P which I can never remember and have been in hospital for a week. Am feeling better now, but from leaving The Two Towers reeling with nausea and looking for a floor to lie on (a reaction which the film assuredly didn't deserve) to agonised stumbles to the doctor and the hospital and surgery and a whole lot of days lying around doing pretty much nothing at all, it hasn't really been fun times. Would have contacted you guys, but I was sick and lethargic and "pretty much nothing at all" seemed like a good option, so I didn't want a stack of people ringing or visiting or whatever. Did miss everyone though, friends and family - being in hospital is a bit like what I think being in another country must be like - you know you can still contact people, but day to day you're in a totally removed world, and the old people seem cut off.

Best thing I heard in my time there was, "Oh sorry, didn't mean to wake you, I was just going to take a blood sample" (You mean you thought I wouldn’t NOTICE??!! Are you some kind of MOSQUITO or something???). Worst, for a second, was “And I’ll just need to grab your balls”, which, concerned readers will be thankful to know, I reprocessed in my mind seconds later (being actually not as slow on the uptake as I may appear) as "pulse". Speaking of intimate contact from members of the medical profession, I found it quite hard to stop myself from slapping doctors’ hands away. Which could be a worry later in life. Strangest thing was, deep in the night after having fallen asleep reading the story of Ernie Dingo’s family (a surprisingly good book, if only because I’ve never before had that opportunity to see inside the life of an Aboriginal family) I woke up and had to have the nurse assure me that my aboriginal cousins hadn’t come and pulled out the drip in my arm. (I have no Aboriginal cousins, at least that I am aware of.)

So yeah, ruptured appendixes, pro or con? On the whole I’d say con, but at least now I know it will never happen again. Feel like I should rush out and get tonsillitis now so I can strike that off the list, but then perhaps I won’t.

Will probably go down to the island for a while now; certainly don’t feel up to the city life of high living and deep philosophy, at least for the moment. Congrats Matty on the news, I always meant to say that on the birth of the other two, but somehow didn’t, I’m good like that. See everyone, maybe next week some time, being sick made me want to catch up with all the people I haven’t seen for a while. But ‘til then, bye.
