Watching Rove last night, I came up with a new project to give my otherwise meaningless life direction: I want to Put Michael Clyne in the Swivel Chair!! For those of you unfamiliar with the concept, a minor celebrity gets wheeled across the stage in a swivel chair, while a guy in a tuxedo gives a precis of their life and achievements. Disgracefully, the segment has never once featured any of the outstanding academics in Melbourne Uni's world class Linguistics department, and I think Clyne would be the perfect candidate to redress the balance. I mean sure the guy might have Master's and Doctorates, and have contributed to more scholarly publications than I am likely to ever read, but who outside of the sociolinguistics scene has ever heard of him? It'd be the perfect vehicle (sorry) to give this unknown icon some national exposure, without the need to dumb down his work through the usual trite chat show questions ("So what was it like working with Nijhoff? They must have been some crazy times!"). In the true commercial spirit of the chat show, he'd have to have some product he wanted to flog, and what could be better than his latest book? Sales of Dynamics of Language Contact would go through the roof!!
